Does the iPhone alarm ring on Silent or in a Focus mode?
Apple's built-in alarm: yes, with caveats
Alarms set in Apple's Clock app do ring with the Silent switch on and during Focus modes. But there are real ways they end up too quiet to wake you:
- Alarm volume follows the ringer volume. If the ringer is turned way down (or "Change with Buttons" is on and it got lowered during the day), the alarm is quiet too.
- Attention-aware features on Face ID iPhones can lower the alarm volume when the phone thinks you're looking at it.
- Audio routed to a connected speaker or headphones can leave the phone itself nearly silent.
Third-party alarm apps: historically, often no
This is the part most people learn the hard way. Before iOS 26, third-party alarm apps could not schedule a true system alarm — they fired notifications (which Silent mode, Focus, or force-quitting the app can suppress) or kept background audio alive (which the system can kill overnight). That's why a third-party alarm could simply not go off.
